Young Conker is a platform video game developed by Asobo Studio and released for the Microsoft HoloLens in 2016. It is the latest game in the Conker series and follows the story of Conker the Squirrel and Berri sometime prior to Conker's Bad Fur Day, working with the Squirrel High Command and going on spy missions to foil the plans of Professor Von Kriplespac and his weasel henchmen in a parody of the spy genre, and Template:W films in particular.

Gameplay

Young Conker is separated out into episodes, which are further divided into chapters and levels. The only known episode at present is Spyfur, which parodies the spy genre, and has Conker change into a jumpsuit to do James Bond inspired missions, though concept art exists of other scenarios with Wild West and Pirate themes[1]. Gameplay functions via voice or hand motion commands, either verbally telling Conker what to do or using specific hand motions like pinching or pointing to prompt his actions. Levels can consist of various completion requirements, such as collecting a set number of a specific macguffin, defeating or destroying enemies or plot objects, or reaching a goal, with levels consisting of various gameplay setpieces such as jump pads, coins, enemies, and scenery objects overlaid onto the room in which you are playing via the HoloLens' object mapping technology. As room geometry requires, the level may extend up walls or float in mid air, with Conker using various narrative devices to run on vertical surfaces or employing a helicopter pack to fly through the air as directed.

Development and release

Young Conker was developed by Asobo Studio with input from Rare for the Microsoft HoloLens, and was one of the apps shown in initial launch announcements of the platform[2]. The game was released in January of 2016, but most outlets failed to notice.

Reception

Young Conker received generally negative to middling reviews from critics and the internet at large.[3][4][5] Most were left with an impression of a novel technical demo app, unaware that the title is a full game, and the HoloLens' prohibitive price has lead to most of the intended target audience being unable to get any first hand experience. Many are also generally unaware that the game released at all, with many sources still listing the game as pending or even cancelled, despite Microsoft's store page for the title listing a clear release date. In addition to the general difficulties with actually playing the game, Conker's new design has been met with much internet backlash and bad reception.
